UNDERSTANDING THE TREATMENT

What is in-clinic whitening?

Professional whitening carried out by your dentist in one visit.

In-clinic whitening lightens the natural colour of your teeth in one appointment. Your dentist first protects your gums. Then a professional-strength hydrogen peroxide whitening gel is applied to the front surfaces of your teeth and activated with a blue LED light in timed rounds. Throughout the treatment, your dentist checks on your comfort and how your gums are doing.

The gel works on staining that has built up inside the enamel over time, from kopi, teh, coffee, tea, red wine and smoking, and from the natural yellowing that comes with age. This is different from scaling and polishing, which removes plaque, tartar and surface stains but does not change the colour of the tooth itself.

Why it has to be a dentist: in Singapore, tooth-whitening products containing more than 6% hydrogen peroxide may only be used by a registered dental practitioner. A dentist also checks for decay, gum disease, cracks and existing crowns or fillings before whitening, because these affect both safety and how even your result will look.

Results vary from person to person. How much your teeth lighten depends on your starting shade and the type of staining. Yellow-brown staining from food and drink usually responds better than grey discolouration. Your dentist records your shade before and after treatment so you can see the change.

YOUR VISIT

What happens during your whitening visit

One appointment of under 2 hours, from check-in to aftercare advice.

1

Dental check

Your dentist checks your teeth and gums for decay, gum inflammation, cracks and existing crowns or fillings, and confirms whitening is suitable for you. If you are due for a clean, we will recommend scaling and polishing first.

2

Shade recorded

Your starting shade is noted on a shade guide so you can compare before and after for yourself.

3

Gums and lips protected

A cheek retractor keeps your lips away from your teeth, and a protective barrier is placed over your gums so the gel only touches tooth enamel.

4

Whitening gel and blue light

Professional-strength whitening gel is applied to the front surfaces of your teeth and activated with a blue LED light in timed rounds. Your dentist checks on your comfort between rounds.

5

Final shade check

The gel is removed and your shade is checked again. Teeth can look slightly brighter on the day and settle over the following days.

6

Aftercare briefing

We explain what to avoid for the first 48 hours and how to manage any sensitivity, and you can head home straight away.

IS IT RIGHT FOR YOU?

Who whitening suits

Whitening works on natural teeth. Your dentist will confirm suitability at your check.

Usually a good fit

  • Yellowing from kopi, teh, coffee, tea or red wine
  • Teeth that have darkened gradually with age
  • Healthy teeth and gums, with no untreated decay
  • You want a brighter smile before an event or photos
  • You have recently finished braces or Invisalign (see our braces whitening guide)

Wait, or talk to your dentist first

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Children and teenagers
  • Untreated decay or gum disease (treat this first)
  • Crowns, veneers or fillings on front teeth (these will not change colour)
  • Very sensitive teeth or exposed roots
  • A single dark tooth, which may need a different approach (see discoloured tooth)
PLANNING AROUND AN EVENT

Year-end, weddings and Chinese New Year

Allow time for any sensitivity to settle and for your shade to stabilise before the photos.

Christmas & year-end partiesBook by early to mid DecemberStart in mid November
Wedding or pre-wedding shoot2–4 weeks before the shootStart 4–6 weeks before
Chinese New Year (Sat 6 Feb 2027)By the week of 25 January 2027Start in early January

If you are due for a check-up or clean, book it a few days to a week before your whitening appointment. Reunion dinners and visiting come with plenty of tea, braised dishes and sauces, so plan whitening so that the first 48 hours afterwards do not fall on a big feast. FAQ

Common questions about teeth whitening

How much does teeth whitening cost at Trust Dental?+

In-clinic teeth whitening at Trust Dental Surgery is $588 before GST ($640.92 with 9% GST), done in a single visit. Our dentist-prescribed take-home whitening kit is $420 before GST ($457.80 with GST). Whitening is a cosmetic treatment, so it is not claimable under Medisave or CHAS.

How long does in-clinic whitening take?+

One visit of under 2 hours. That includes the dental check, protecting your gums, applying the whitening gel in timed rounds under a blue LED light, and a final shade check and aftercare briefing.

How white will my teeth get?+

Results vary from person to person, so we do not promise a set number of shades. How much your teeth lighten depends on your starting shade and the type of staining. Your dentist records your shade on a shade guide before and after treatment so you can see the change for yourself.

Does teeth whitening hurt?+

Most people feel little during treatment, but temporary tooth sensitivity afterwards is common. The Singapore Dental Association notes that up to two-thirds of people get mild to moderate sensitivity in the early stages, which usually settles within a few days. Tell your dentist if you already have sensitive teeth so it can be managed.

Is professional teeth whitening safe?+

Professional whitening is considered safe when a dentist checks your teeth and gums first and carries out the treatment. In Singapore, tooth-whitening products containing more than 6% hydrogen peroxide can only be used by a registered dental practitioner.

Will whitening work on my crowns, veneers or fillings?+

No. Whitening gel only lightens natural tooth enamel. Crowns, veneers, bonding and tooth-coloured fillings keep their original colour, so they may look darker than your newly whitened teeth. Your dentist will point these out before treatment and discuss options if they are on your front teeth.

Can I use Medisave or CHAS for teeth whitening?+

No. Teeth whitening is cosmetic, so it is not claimable under Medisave or CHAS. CHAS subsidies do apply to scaling and polishing, which we recommend before whitening if you have not had a clean in the last six months.

Should I choose in-clinic whitening or the take-home kit?+

In-clinic whitening is done in one visit, which suits you if you have an event coming up or prefer not to wear trays at home. The take-home kit costs less and works gradually over a couple of weeks of daily wear at home. Your dentist can advise which suits your teeth.

How long before Chinese New Year or a wedding should I whiten?+

For in-clinic whitening, book at least one to two weeks before the date. This gives any sensitivity time to settle and lets your shade stabilise. If you are using the take-home kit, start about three to four weeks before.

What should I avoid after teeth whitening?+

For the first 48 hours, avoid strongly coloured food and drinks such as kopi, teh, coffee, tea, red wine, curry and dark sauces, and avoid smoking. Your teeth pick up stains more easily straight after whitening.

Do I need scaling and polishing before whitening?+

It is recommended if you have not had a professional clean in the last six months, because tartar and surface stains stop the gel from working evenly. Scaling and polishing at Trust Dental is $85 before GST and CHAS subsidised.

Who should not have teeth whitening?+

Whitening is not recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or for children and teenagers. It should also wait until any tooth decay or gum disease has been treated. If you have very sensitive teeth or exposed roots, your dentist will tell you whether whitening is suitable.
