Understanding the procedure

What is a root canal?

A root canal is a procedure that saves a tooth when the soft tissue inside it — called the pulp — becomes infected or inflamed. Instead of extracting the tooth, your dentist removes the damaged pulp, cleans the root canals, and seals them to prevent further infection.

The treated tooth is then restored with a dental crown, allowing you to keep your natural tooth and maintain your bite. Root canal treatment has a high success rate and is far more conservative than extraction.

1

Remove the infection

The infected nerve and pulp are carefully removed from inside the tooth.

2

Clean and shape

The root canals are thoroughly cleaned, disinfected, and shaped for filling.

3

Seal and restore

The canals are filled and sealed, then a crown is placed to protect the tooth.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is a root canal painful?

+
Root canal treatment is performed under local anaesthesia, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Most patients report that it feels similar to having a filling done. After the procedure, mild soreness is normal for a few days and can be managed with over-the-counter painkillers.

How long does a root canal take?

+
A root canal procedure typically takes 60 to 90 minutes per session. Front teeth are usually quicker, while molars with multiple canals may take longer. Most cases are completed in one or two visits depending on the complexity of the tooth.

How much does a root canal cost in Singapore?

+
At Trust Dental Surgery, root canal treatment for front teeth starts from $650, premolars from $750, and molars from $1,200 due to the additional canals involved. A dental crown after root canal starts from $600. Exact fees depend on individual assessment, and your dentist will provide a full cost breakdown before treatment begins.

Can I use Flexi-MediSave for root canal treatment?

+
Root canal treatment is claimable under Flexi-MediSave for patients aged 60 and older. Flexi-MediSave is a scheme that allows seniors to use their Medisave for outpatient treatments including dental surgical procedures. Trust Dental Surgery is MOH accredited, and our team will assist you with the claims process.

What happens if I don't get a root canal?

+
If a root canal is needed but not performed, the infection inside the tooth can spread to the surrounding bone and tissues, potentially causing an abscess, swelling, and severe pain. Eventually, the tooth may need to be extracted. Early treatment helps save the natural tooth and prevents complications.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

+
In most cases, yes. A tooth that has undergone root canal treatment becomes more brittle over time because it no longer has a living nerve and blood supply. A dental crown protects the treated tooth from fracturing and restores its full function for biting and chewing.

How long does a root canal tooth last?

+
With proper care, a root canal treated tooth can last for many years or even decades. The longevity depends on factors like the quality of the restoration, your oral hygiene habits, and regular dental checkups. A well-fitted crown and good home care significantly extend the life of the treated tooth.

Can a root canal fail?

+
While root canal treatment has a high success rate, in rare cases it can fail due to complex canal anatomy, reinfection, or a crack in the tooth. If a root canal fails, retreatment or other options such as an apicoectomy may be recommended. Your dentist will monitor the tooth at follow-up appointments.

How do I know if I need a root canal?

+
Common signs that you may need a root canal include severe or persistent toothache, prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold, swollen or tender gums near a tooth, a darkened or discoloured tooth, and pain when biting or chewing. Your dentist will confirm the diagnosis with a clinical examination and X-ray.

Is it better to extract or do a root canal?

+
Whenever possible, saving the natural tooth with a root canal is generally preferred over extraction. Your natural tooth provides the best chewing function and maintains the alignment of surrounding teeth. Extraction may lead to bone loss and the need for a replacement such as a dental implant or bridge. Your dentist will advise which option is best for your situation.

Can I use CHAS for root canal treatment?

+
Yes. CHAS subsidies for root canal treatment range from $217.50 (Orange card, anterior tooth) to $594.50 (Pioneer Generation, molar). Pre-molar root canals receive up to $472.50 (PG). Bring your CHAS card and NRIC to your appointment. Trust Dental Surgery is CHAS accredited at both our Jurong West and Clementi clinics. See our full CHAS subsidy guide for details.
