Understanding your pain

Common causes of toothache

Toothache can result from a range of dental issues. Identifying the cause is the first step to effective treatment.

🦷

Cavities & Decay

When bacteria erode tooth enamel, the deeper layers become exposed, leading to sensitivity and pain that can worsen over time.

💪

Cracked Tooth

A crack in the tooth can cause sharp pain when biting or chewing. It may not always be visible to the eye but needs professional evaluation.

🧹

Gum Infection

Infected or inflamed gums can cause throbbing pain around the affected tooth. Left untreated, gum infections can affect the supporting bone.

🦸

Wisdom Tooth

Impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth can cause pressure, swelling, and pain at the back of the jaw.

Exposed Nerve

When the protective layers of a tooth are worn away or damaged, the nerve inside can become exposed, causing intense sensitivity and pain.

🔴

Abscess

A dental abscess is a pocket of infection at the root of a tooth or between the gum and tooth. It often causes constant, throbbing pain and swelling.

Temporary relief tips

While these measures may help ease discomfort, they are not a substitute for professional dental treatment.

1

Warm salt water rinse

Dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water. Rinse gently for 30 seconds. This can help reduce bacteria and soothe inflammation.

2

Over-the-counter painkillers

Paracetamol or ibuprofen can help manage pain temporarily. Follow the dosage instructions on the packaging.

3

Cold compress

Apply a cold pack wrapped in a cloth to the outside of your cheek for 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off. This can help reduce swelling.

4

Avoid hot and cold food

Stick to lukewarm, soft foods and avoid chewing on the affected side to prevent further irritation.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What causes a toothache?

+
Toothaches are commonly caused by cavities or tooth decay, cracked or fractured teeth, gum infections, wisdom tooth problems, exposed nerves, or dental abscesses. A dentist can determine the exact cause through an examination and X-ray.

Should I go to A&E for a toothache?

+
A&E departments generally do not have dental equipment to treat toothaches. They may provide painkillers and antibiotics, but you will still need to see a dentist for proper treatment. It is better to contact a dental clinic directly for a same-day appointment. Trust Dental Surgery offers same-day appointments at our Jurong West and Clementi clinics.

How much does toothache treatment cost?

+
Treatment costs depend on the cause. Fillings range from $85 to $180 per tooth. Root canal treatment starts from $650 and is Medisave claimable. Crowns cost around $1,200 per unit. Extractions vary depending on complexity. CHAS subsidies are available for eligible patients. Your dentist will provide a full cost breakdown before any treatment begins.

Can I use Medisave for toothache treatment?

+
Medisave can be used for certain dental surgical procedures including surgical extractions and wisdom tooth surgery. For root canal treatment, Flexi-MediSave is available for patients aged 60 and older. Trust Dental Surgery is MOH accredited and our team will help you with the claims process.

How can I prevent toothaches?

+
Good oral hygiene is key to preventing toothaches. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, limit sugary foods and drinks, and visit your dentist regularly for checkups and professional cleaning. Early detection of cavities and gum issues can prevent them from developing into painful problems.

Can a toothache go away on its own?

+
A toothache may temporarily subside, but this does not mean the underlying problem has resolved. The nerve may die, causing pain to stop temporarily, while the infection continues to spread. It is important to see a dentist to identify and treat the root cause before it worsens.

What painkillers can I take for a toothache?

+
Over-the-counter paracetamol or ibuprofen can help manage toothache pain temporarily. Follow the dosage instructions on the packaging and avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum, as this can cause tissue damage. Painkillers only provide temporary relief and are not a substitute for professional dental treatment.

How long does a root canal take?

+
A root canal procedure typically takes 60 to 90 minutes per session. Most cases are completed in one or two visits depending on the complexity of the tooth. Your dentist will discuss the expected timeline during your consultation.

Is a root canal painful?

+
Root canal treatment is performed under local anaesthesia, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Most patients report that it feels similar to having a filling done. After the procedure, mild soreness is normal for a few days and can be managed with prescribed painkillers.

Can I use Medisave for dental emergencies?

+
Medisave can be used for qualifying dental surgical procedures such as wisdom tooth surgery, dental implants, and surgical extractions. For root canal treatment, Flexi-MediSave is available for patients aged 60 and older. It does not cover routine procedures like fillings or simple extractions. Trust Dental Surgery is MOH accredited, and our team will advise you on what is claimable during your visit.

Can I use CHAS subsidies for toothache treatment?

+
Yes. Consultations, X-rays, fillings, extractions, and root canal treatments are all covered under CHAS. Subsidy amounts depend on your card type. For example, Pioneer Generation cardholders receive up to $30.50 for consultations, $60 for complex fillings, $78.50 for posterior extractions, and up to $594.50 for molar root canals. Trust Dental Surgery is CHAS Blue and Orange accredited. Bring your CHAS card and NRIC to your appointment. See our full CHAS subsidy guide for details.
