Book in-clinic whitening at least 1–2 weeks before your event (one visit, under 2 hours, $588 before GST at Trust Dental). Start a take-home kit 3–4 weeks before ($420 before GST). If you are due for a check-up or clean, do it a few days to a week before whitening. For Chinese New Year on 6 February 2027, aim to whiten by the week of 25 January.
Why Not Whiten the Day Before?
- Sensitivity: mild, temporary sensitivity is common after whitening and usually settles within a few days. You don't want that during a reunion dinner.
- Shade settling: teeth can look slightly brighter straight after treatment, then settle over the following days. Leaving a buffer means your photos show your settled shade.
- The 48-hour rule: for the first 48 hours, teeth pick up stains more easily. Tea, braised dishes, dark sauces and red wine are all part of festive meals.

- Check-up and clean: scaling and polishing ($85 before GST, CHAS subsidised) removes tartar and surface stains so the whitening gel works evenly.
- Whitening visit: your dentist checks your teeth, protects your gums and carries out the treatment.
- 48 hours of careful eating: skip kopi, teh, red wine, curry and dark sauces, and don't smoke.
- Let it settle: keep a week or two between whitening and your event if you can.
Festive Food and Your Results
Reunion dinners and house visits mean plenty of Chinese tea, braised duck and pork, soy-based sauces, and red wine. None of this is off-limits once the first 48 hours are over. Rinsing with water after dark food and drinks, and brushing about 30 minutes later, helps your result last longer. More tips in how long teeth whitening lasts.
Before You Book: Things to Check
- Crowns, veneers or fillings on your front teeth won't change colour. Ask your dentist how they will look next to whitened teeth.
- If your teeth are already sensitive, start a desensitising toothpaste a week or two before.
- Whitening isn't recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
